Tom Kilian: A Sculptor's Journey in Art and Humanity

Born in South Amboy, New Jersey, Tom Kilian is a sculptor and artist whose work is deeply connected to natural materials and the environment. His sculptural pieces are defined by their simple, organic forms that evoke a sense of familiarity by drawing inspiration from shapes found in nature.
Tom is the founder of IBXarts, a non-profit organization that showcased the work of artists in the Inner Banks of North Carolina. His efforts gained significant attention, culminating in a 2007 lead article in Our State magazine titled "Banking on Arts." IBXarts provided a crucial venue for local artists and solidified Tom's role in the regional arts community.

Tom's artistic expression also became a powerful form of activism. The mission of MERCY PARTNERS, an organization he founded with his wife of 33 years, Sandie, began with his gallery exhibit, "15 for Darfur," which was shown across five North Carolina galleries. During one of the exhibits, an attendee confronted Tom, asking, "What are you personally doing about the genocide in Darfur?" Stunned, he had no immediate response. Tom and Sandie took the question as a personal challenge. After much prayer, Tom set off for Sudan, where he founded the organization.
While not overseas, Tom and Sandie operate the mission from their home and devote a segment of their time to the creative pursuits they find refuge in. Recently, following the passing of both of their mothers, Tom and Sandie have found solace in the comforts of the missions campus in Virginia. For Tom, it's the refuge of his studio; for Sandie, it's the peace of the kitchen. In these spaces, they find presence and enlightenment in their respective crafts, discovering new purpose in both visual and culinary art.
